Juan Lopez Seleccion Suprema ER UK 2009

Very pleasant cold smell.... coffee, tobacco, wood... slightly oily wrapper with a lot of significant veins...

The first puffs of the first third are very pleasant, smooth and creamy, reminding me of a Latte Macchiato.... but out of a sudden it's getting extremly woody. Sawdust... very dry... drying out the mouth....

Also the second third is dominated by very woody flavors, from time to time it's getting tannic.

In the last third there is a lot of ammonia and it's getting a bit harsh... but: the last inch is surprisingly smooth and creamy again... really strange....

I think that this cigar needs definitely a lot of more time, it would be a waste to smoke them now. If you have a box of those, lettem rest for some years, before you think of smoking them.

09/22 - Welcome back smoke with Marcel

Yesterday I met with Marcel for a smoke after he came back from a 3 week vacation trip to Florida and the Bahamas....

When he arrived at our home he handed me out a cool T-Shirt... everybody who knows "Achmed the dead terrorist" knows what I'm talking about....

We went to Kriessern which is another small village just around the corner. They have a lounge in that restaurant where you can smoke and they also serve good food, I like their different kinds of Cordon bleu with different kinds of ham and cheese... yesterday it was warm enough to sit outside in the yard and enjoy an open air smoke...

Talkin about smokin.... I had a '99 RASS, which was really good, but the RyJ Exhibition No. 2 EL 2000 was definetly an outstanding smoke. I wish I would have a box of those...

It was another nice evening.. .and thx again for the shirt.....

Before we left we saw a hot air ballon in the sky....I wasn't aware that they'll still be in the air when it's dark... it looked fantastic.... even better to see real than on the picture....

09/15 - Business in Britain

Last week I was in Britain for three days for a business trip. After my arrival there was still some time until we could meet our first customer and so I went with our new agent to the city of London where we went to the place opposite of St. Paul's where the famous British TV chef Jamie Oliver will open his new concept restaurant soon together with the American TV chef Adam Perry-Lang.

There'll be a new restaurant with an area of 4'500 sqm / 5'382 sqare yards and a butchery with a dry aging room behind a big glass front, where the beef'll be aged for about 16 weeks. Cool idea, with a good result for the beef.... but for sure not cheap if you wanna something there....

The restaurant and the butcher's shop are integrated in a building called "The one new change" where other shops'll be located.... some of that is said to open on Monday and the rest latest until middle of October... unbelievable cuz everything there is a big construction site....

Our agent's company equipped the dry aging room with the beams and the hooks, for that reason we visited the place to check if everything is fine there.

Unfortunately Jamie wasn't there (he left the place a few hours before we arrived), but the guys there told us he swung at the hooks like a lil monkey....

After this inspection we left London by using the tube, picked up our car in the garage, which seemed to be a garage of really rich people (7 Ferraris, 3 Bentleys, 4 Aston Martin and 5 Porsches had been parked there and most of them haven´t been moved for a long time), and drove to the outskirts in the industrial area where I had my first meeting.

Thursday and Friday'd been filled with some more appointments, hopefully they lead to the success that we need with our new product that I supported during this trip.

Blind tasting experiments - Part 3

Again we made a blind tasting... this time with Corona Gorda sized cigars. And I started with a mistake but I put the Bolivar Corona Extra on the panel which is no CG but a Francisco. Will the people recognize it? Let's see....

The panel beside the Bolivar was:
  • El Rey del Mundo Gran Corona, RPO MAR 01 --> labeled as No. 1
  • Bolivar Corona Extra, URL MAR 01 --> labeled as No. 2
  • Rafael Gonzalez Corona Extra,  UE CC DDE (some 99 code) --> labeled as No. 3
18 people - including myself - took part this time.... again 2 guys were not able to smoke those 3 cigars... nothing new.

A handful of the guys found out that the Bolivar had a different size (a bit shorter and smaller RG) so they increased their chances to make the right guess.

I also smoked all three cigars; I liked all three. The Bolivar was the "best" followed by the ERdM and RG, both dead even. The ERdM definetly needs much more time, it's getting harsh after half of the cigar is smoked. But the aromas are as I like them for a cigar of that brand.

Two people were - for whatever reason - not able to smoke those three cigars in a time period of 5 weeks.....

The other gave me their vote with the following result:
  • The guess of three people was totally wrong, they recognized none of the cigars.
  • Nine people recognized just one cigar, surprisingly only five of them recognized the Bolivar, two of them also found out that the size wasn't correct.
  • At least three people gave me the correct result, they recognized all three cigars and additionally they all three told me that I made a mistake with the Bolivar.

It was very funny again and it proofs that a blind tasting is a really tough thing.

Here some impressions of the descriptions the people made on the cigars:

Comments about cigar no. 1 - ERdM Gran Corona
  • ... metallic taste in the mouth...
  • ... zero draw, dropped it after 10 mins...
  • ... filigrane sweetness, bloomy, decent but pleasant bitterness...
  • ... really strong, pure tobacco, would have guessed this is a very young cigar...
  • ... lousy lookin, bittersweet taste, smoked only 1 third....
  • ... hints of chocolate, a bit grassy, decent bitterness....

Comments about cigar no. 2 - Bolivar Corona Extra
  • ... very bitter....
  • ... decent citrus, spicey-sweet tobacco, some earthiness, white pepper and leather...
  • ... intensive aroma....
  • ... typical aged Bolivar
  • ... very earthy and notes of citrus oil...
  • ... woody and earthy aroma mixed with citrus...
  • ... intensive spices and aromas of leather and tobacco....

Comments about cigar no. 3 - Rafael Gonzalez Corona Extra
  • ... pleasant taste with some tannins, some floral notes...
  • ... Bread, roast aromas, some graphite, hints of leather and lovage....
  • ... dry, grassy, bitter...
  • ... herbal notes with some roasty undertones, very bitter in the end...
  • ... taste of maroni and dried flowers.... seems to have a good potential....
  • ... light smoke with pleasant floral notes and some honey sweetness, nuts and vanilla...

09/11 - Suserfäscht in Balgach

Every two years the so called Suserfäscht is here in Balgach, a wine festival in the older part of the village...

On Friday night, before the festival officially started there was a wine tasting event with several wineries of this region here, so we took the chance to go there and try some of that stuff.

Tanja's not the big wine drinker... the only exception she makes for sweet white wine.... like ice wine etc. so she stuck to non-alcoholic drinks....

We tried several red wines from the region, matured in barrique casks, also some sweet desert wines, the last one Tanja also liked.... a nice evening....

On Saturday we went again there, it's just over the street from our house.... so we picked up the neighbours from below.... and there we go....

We only'd breakfast in the morning so there was the urgent need for something to eat... but... we started with some wine and beer.... hahaha

It's around 10 pm... and I was hungry.... as all the others were too. So we changed the location and took a seat to eat something.... and to have some wine... As you can see we found some funny sun glasses lying around on the table...

Steffi was not "allowed" to wear them.... see the result, a very disappointed face...

We sat there for a while and had a lot of fun, but by the time it was gettin colder and we changed the location again into one of the tents where the temperatures were much more convenient... again with some good drinks and a lot of fun.... a nice evening that we all really enjoyed... See you again in 2012.....

Punch Platinos ER India 2009

Very nice presentation with the star-spangled silver foil on the Double Corona sized cigar.

After removing it you have a colorado colored cigar in front of you, with fine wrapper, a lil shiny and evenly rolled.

The smell shows decent notes of tobacco, cedar, some hints of honey and green coffee.

So let's fire it up and take the first puffs.... Wow..... cery, very creamy.... on the mild side... you can find the green coffee that appeared in the cold smell... could nose-exhale all time, not biting, very smooth. Surprisingly there are hints of aromas which are typical for an aged cigar and that I never had in a cigar which was that fresh. I'm really impressed.

From the first to the second third the cigar became a bit stronger, would call it medium now. You can also recognize a change in the taste... Tar comes up sometimes, it's like walking along a fresh tared road.... leather, dark roasted coffee and the aroma of cedar in the background.

The last third gives you a punch.... and shows: this is NOT a typical Punch which gets boring and flat in the last third... this one is a kick in the ass! Leather and oak wood are dominating the last third, there are some flavors which are peatlike as I know it from the Islay whiskys that I prefer....

The smoke lasted on the whole for 150 minutes and I don't regret a single minute of it. The development of this cigar was amazing: from very mild it increases its intensity up to medium in the middle of the smoke and ended up up really strong in the last third.

Thumbs up for this great smoke.... best Punch DC ever smoked!

09/05 - Touching and petting wild animals....

Another sunny Sunday with pleasant temperatures around 20 °C / 68 F, so we took the chance to make the planned venture which has been cancelled a few weekends ago due to the rainy weather: we went to the adventure zoo in Eichberg (www.zooeichberg.ch).

This zoo is very special... not very big - only a few animals - but the visitors have the possibility to get in contact with some of the animals.

At first we saw a pair of snow leopards, an endangered species... both are 17 and 18 yo, which is more or less the expected age for those.... both walking around very leisurely, enjoying the fresh turkey which they got for food.... fascinating to see their big paws which act like snow shoes in the region where they originally come from. The can jump from the standing position up to 16 m / 17.5 yards which shows their immense strength... one of the reasons why you cannot touch them.... if they give you a friendly hug, they'll seriously hurt you.

Those monkeys are less dangerous, so there was no problem to feed them, but it's also not recommended to pet them... they'll bite... and bites of monkeys can be dangerous for human beings and have to be treated by a doctor.

Big Emu Caruso - top speed app. 50 km/h / 31 mph: suprisingly he can run with this speed up to 2 hours!! That´s really imrpressing. Tanja fed him, nobody else dared to so... later on we could pet his feathers. Caruso has a very good relation to the zoo keeper, he fonlded her like crazy while the people touched him.

The lil fish otter made a good show.... the knowledge that they'll get some deer meat makes them do funny things.... and they didn't feel bad for the mess they made in their bassin which´s cleaned before we moved on the next animal.... the red panda.

He lost his mother a few days after he was born due to this the girl to be seen in the picture, rose him up. He needed to get his milk every two hours... all around the clock.... that's a hard challenge... but you can see that he LOVES his "mother"... playing all the time... having fun... it's really nice to see....

They also have some Alpakas there... related to the Lamas which live in the Andes in South America... which have the ability to spit... and hitting their aim to a distance of 3 m / 120 inch. So... better not to provoke them...

At the end of the tour we reached Tanja´s and my personal highlight: the hunting leopard. I like all kinda cats... the small ones we have at home but also the bigger ones that we saw there.

Jade, the one which you can see right here is used to the contact to humans... but before they came outta the cage with it, we got some instructions to take care of.

After that we got the chance to touch and pet it... it's purring like crazy... as a cat but much louder.... I never had the chance to touch an animal like this and it´s definetly a very nice experience.

The whole visit was very interesting, I'm sure we´ll go there again... that´s one of those things which are worth to be supported.

EDIT, 11/11/2010: We feel sad about the news we heard this morning on our local radio station: they have to close the Zoo Eichberg do to the fact that there is no money to run it anymore.

Ramon Allones Estupendo ER Asia Pacific 2006

Made of a fine and matt colorado-coloured wrapper, firmly rolled and without any pressing.... my first Estupendo which I will allow to rise in smoke. A few times turning above the flame and the glow ring is there already. Cutting.... taking the first puffs.... lean back and enjoy. Creamy smoke climbs up, this promises to become a pleasant smoke.

The first third is stamped by an interplay between honey and tobacco, always well balanced that the sweetness does not become meddlesome. In the course tannin notes came up, reminded me of a strong red wine.....

In the second third the honey-sweet is replaced by dark chocolate, it becomes a little harsher, but by no means disagreeable. The tobacco mark becomes stronger, woody taste joins to it...

The last third becomes strong, dominated by tobacco, leather and roasted flavors. Wow, brilliant combination which holds the tension of flavor up to the end.

A great cigar with a perfect draw for the whole duration of the smoke which was app. 100 minutes.
