Blind tasting experiments - Part 3

Again we made a blind tasting... this time with Corona Gorda sized cigars. And I started with a mistake but I put the Bolivar Corona Extra on the panel which is no CG but a Francisco. Will the people recognize it? Let's see....

The panel beside the Bolivar was:
  • El Rey del Mundo Gran Corona, RPO MAR 01 --> labeled as No. 1
  • Bolivar Corona Extra, URL MAR 01 --> labeled as No. 2
  • Rafael Gonzalez Corona Extra,  UE CC DDE (some 99 code) --> labeled as No. 3
18 people - including myself - took part this time.... again 2 guys were not able to smoke those 3 cigars... nothing new.

A handful of the guys found out that the Bolivar had a different size (a bit shorter and smaller RG) so they increased their chances to make the right guess.

I also smoked all three cigars; I liked all three. The Bolivar was the "best" followed by the ERdM and RG, both dead even. The ERdM definetly needs much more time, it's getting harsh after half of the cigar is smoked. But the aromas are as I like them for a cigar of that brand.

Two people were - for whatever reason - not able to smoke those three cigars in a time period of 5 weeks.....

The other gave me their vote with the following result:
  • The guess of three people was totally wrong, they recognized none of the cigars.
  • Nine people recognized just one cigar, surprisingly only five of them recognized the Bolivar, two of them also found out that the size wasn't correct.
  • At least three people gave me the correct result, they recognized all three cigars and additionally they all three told me that I made a mistake with the Bolivar.

It was very funny again and it proofs that a blind tasting is a really tough thing.

Here some impressions of the descriptions the people made on the cigars:

Comments about cigar no. 1 - ERdM Gran Corona
  • ... metallic taste in the mouth...
  • ... zero draw, dropped it after 10 mins...
  • ... filigrane sweetness, bloomy, decent but pleasant bitterness...
  • ... really strong, pure tobacco, would have guessed this is a very young cigar...
  • ... lousy lookin, bittersweet taste, smoked only 1 third....
  • ... hints of chocolate, a bit grassy, decent bitterness....

Comments about cigar no. 2 - Bolivar Corona Extra
  • ... very bitter....
  • ... decent citrus, spicey-sweet tobacco, some earthiness, white pepper and leather...
  • ... intensive aroma....
  • ... typical aged Bolivar
  • ... very earthy and notes of citrus oil...
  • ... woody and earthy aroma mixed with citrus...
  • ... intensive spices and aromas of leather and tobacco....

Comments about cigar no. 3 - Rafael Gonzalez Corona Extra
  • ... pleasant taste with some tannins, some floral notes...
  • ... Bread, roast aromas, some graphite, hints of leather and lovage....
  • ... dry, grassy, bitter...
  • ... herbal notes with some roasty undertones, very bitter in the end...
  • ... taste of maroni and dried flowers.... seems to have a good potential....
  • ... light smoke with pleasant floral notes and some honey sweetness, nuts and vanilla...

  1. Hi Heiko,

I myself love a good blind test in cigars, It
always puts things back into perspective.
As for the Bolivar CE, yes ok, It's not exactly a Corona Gorda but it's close Right ?
What would they all say about a Robusto that is not exactly a Robusto ? EXAMPLE:
    Saint Luis Ray, Regios
    Vega Robaina, Famosos
    El Rey del Mundo,Choix Suprême
    And others,They are hermosos No.4's
but we keep calling them, Robusto.
Anyway, I's not that important unless you
know it and use that to identify the brand and
    the vitola, LOL

Take care and thanks for your site, always
enjoyable, keep up the good work.
    Amicalement,
    Guy,
    France

  2. Hi Guy,

    thx for your comment....

Of course you are right about the vitola, the difference is not big (that was the reason why I didn´t realize it) but you could detect it.

As for the Robustos: when I organized the Robusto tasting I excluded Hermosos No. 4, and people knew it.... so they trusted in me that I don´t fool them... and in this case it was not on purpose....

But again it was very interesting and most people said that the didn´t like the ERdM and the RG, for the most the Bolivar was the best.

I like all three, the ERdM and the RG are still too young, they need maybe another 10 years....
