A peaty pre-tasting

The theme of the next tasting in the Griffins Business Lounge in Kreuzlingen will be "Laphroaig - love it or hate it", a Laphroaig Vertical tasting.

I decided upon the the following Whiskys:
  • Laphroaig 7 yo, Douglas Laing's Premier Barrel Selection
  • Laphroaig 10 yo, Exclusive Malts
  • Laphroaig 12 yo, Scotch Single Malt Circle
  • Laphroaig 13 yo, High Spirits
  • Laphroaig 13 yo, Chateau Lafite Finish, Auld Distillers Collection
  • Laphroaig 18 yo, Waldhaus am See

Let's start with the young beast bottled by Douglas Laing.

Nose: Straight peat, some fresh fruits (apple, pears?), charcoal, hints of menthol

Taste: Sweet, apricot jam... and then: PEAT!! black, fresh-milled pepper, leather, tobacco

Aftertaste: The sweetness is fainting away quickly, peat dominated in combination with the the black pepper and charcoal

cigar, cigars, cigar's, blog, blogger, tasted, tasting, tastings, tasty, smoke, smoked, smoking, smokes, smoker, vaduz, kreuzlingen, schweiz, switzerland, suiza, swiss, suisse, whisky, whiskys, whiskies, whiskey, whiskeys, blind tasting, experiment, experiments, review, reviews, reviewing, eldondo, balgach, portmann, portmanns, portmann's, lonsdale, lonsdales, robusto, robustos, corona, coronas, box, humidor, humidors, boxes, tobacco, tabak, zigarre, zigarren, rauchen, verkostung, heiko, blumentritt, heiko blumentritt, jar, jars, ceramic jar, ceramic jars, trip, trips, pharmacy smoke, ans, lounge, edicion, regionales, limitada

Now the next one... with three more years of age, bottled by Exclusive Malts.

Nose: Peat and sea (salt, seaweed etc.), iodine, fresh green apple, hints of nougat

Taste: Fist in the mouth... peat, pleasant sweetness (hints of vanilla), white pepper, liquorice

Aftertaste: Long, peaty and salty finish, really complex if you remember that it's just a 10 yo.

Ready for Maggie's and Bill's bottled gold from the Scotch Single Malt Circle?

Nose: Sweetness of Sherry, aromas of dried fruits and rum raisins, wet charcoal, smoked bacon, decent bitterness from time to time

Taste: Ash, peat, smoke, sweetness of the dried fruits, raspberry, bitter almond

Aftertaste: Ash and sweetness havin an interesting interaction....

Let's fill the 13 yo. from High Spirits in the nosing glass.

Nose: Smoke, rubber, very medicinal, decent fruityness

Taste: Tar and smoke, some smoked bacon and charcoal, hints of citrus, getting salty in the mouth

Aftertaste: Long finish with citrus and salt...

cigar, cigars, cigar's, blog, blogger, tasted, tasting, tastings, tasty, smoke, smoked, smoking, smokes, smoker, vaduz, kreuzlingen, schweiz, switzerland, suiza, swiss, suisse, whisky, whiskys, whiskies, whiskey, whiskeys, blind tasting, experiment, experiments, review, reviews, reviewing, eldondo, balgach, portmann, portmanns, portmann's, lonsdale, lonsdales, robusto, robustos, corona, coronas, box, humidor, humidors, boxes, tobacco, tabak, zigarre, zigarren, rauchen, verkostung, heiko, blumentritt, heiko blumentritt, jar, jars, ceramic jar, ceramic jars, trip, trips, pharmacy smoke, ans, lounge, edicion, regionales, limitada

I'm curious how the wine cask influenced the next 13 yo of the Auld Distillers Collection.

Nose: Sweet peat! Smoke, fresh exotical fruits, grapes

Taste: Peat (but not too dominant), decent sweetness of berries, some smoke... and more some sweetness, still very pleasant, passion fruit?

Aftertaste: Everlasting peaty sweetness... very nice!

It's time for an adult now, 18 yo. from Waldhaus am See, St. Moritz. I never had a bad Whisky from them... so, the expectations are on a high level.

Nose: Decent bitterness, smoke and peat, walnut, almond, charcoal, menthol

Taste: Spicy at the first impression, black pepper (fresh milled)... then it makes room for the peat which covers the palate, tar, roasted wood,

Aftertaste: Peat and pepper, long and pleasant...

Conclusion: The oldest, which is the 18 yo. with the Waldhaus Label is a good one, fulfills the expectations but the 13 yo. finished in the Chateau Lafite casks is my personal winner of those.

I'm curious about the impressions of the guys when we make the official tasting... would be interesting to hear their thought and how the rate those six...

BTW: for the tasting it'll be seven... there'll be another bottle (which is still on its way) and I won't tell what it'll be...
