Vintage smokes

Last year I showed some vintage cigars that I have... I guess it's time to show some more.

From left to right you can see the following:
  • 1994 - The 1994s have been in a special humidor, which has been released in 1994, 502 humidors have been made in total. It's part of something which some cigar smokers call the "Holy Trinity" (the other two are the 1492 and the Cubatobacco 25). Luckily I´d the chance in the past to get a handful of those.
  • Davidoff Dom Perignon from 1987 - One of the most famous Davidoffs, hard to get nowadays...
  • Don Candido 501 from the late 70s - One of the Dunhill Exclusive brands was Don Candido, which was stopped in 1982. The 501 is a Lonsdale sized cigar.
  • Dunhill Tubo from the early 80s - The Dunhills have been discontinued in the year 1991. Everybody who ever smoked a Dunhill will agree with me, that it's really a pity that those cigars are no longer in production.

03/25 - Laphroaig Vertical Tasting

After the last event when we'd some rare and old stuff I needed to bring people back to earth... what's better to use for this than some peaty stuff? I made my decision for Laphroaig. Laphroaig only.

A vertical tasting with the following participants:
  • Laphroaig 7 yo, Douglas Laing's Premier Barrel Selection
  • Laphroaig 10 yo, Exclusive Malts
  • Laphroaig 12 yo, Scotch Single Malt Circle
  • Laphroaig 13 yo, High Spirits
  • Laphroaig 13 yo, Chateau Lafite Finish, Auld Distillers Collection
  • Laphroaig 18 yo, Waldhaus am See
  • Laphroaig 25 yo, Distillery bottling
But before we started we, which was Marcel, Alex and Tom met at Urs shop to have our first cigar, which was a Partagas Serie de Connaisseur No. 1 for me... a good start into this evening full of pleasure.... and it fit to the advice I gave the people, that Partagas would go along well with the Whisky.

Of course we needed a good basis before we started with all that Whisky, so we walked over the border to Konstanz to a local Chinese (fast food) restaurant to have some fried noodles with duck.

    Duck and fried noodles

Back at the lounge I arranged all the stuff, waiting for the rest of the participants to arrive. 7 really interesting Laphroaigs with an age from 7 years up to 25 years... the slogan of the evening was: Laphroaig - love it or hate it. That´s the official slogan of Laphroaig and it hits the nail on the head, because in most cases there is only black or white for this Whisky... love it or hate it.

This time we'd been 9 people, more or less the same crew which attended also the other four tasting which we'd before.

On top we got some nice cigars from Urs who also took part at this evening... he brought a box of Partagas Lusitanias to smoke... from 2007... and they´re really good and were a really good match.

Range of 7 Laphroaigs, Partagas Lusitanias in the foreground, gifted by Urs

It's again an interesting discussion to talk with the guys about their impressions... to find out what's everybody tasting... agreeing or disagreeing with the notes that I took and put into the presentation...

If I have to make the top three of this range it would be the following:
    • Laphroaig 25 yo, Distillerie bottling
    • Laphroaig 13 yo, Chateau Lafite Finish, Auld Distillers Collection
    • Laphroaig 12 yo, Scotch Single Malt Circle

The 25 yo is simply amazing... like the Ardbeg LotI or Bowmore 25 yo. Unfortunately only 40 %, but if you lean back and enjoy it, it´s HEAVEN!

    Pourin in some nectar

The two others were close ahead for me... the Chateau Lafite cask had an amazing influence on the smoky Laphroaig.... the interaction between peat and sweetness of the wine is fantastic... and Maggie's Laphroaig... what else can I say then: you picked up another great cask... as all the good ones I tried before... go ahead like this.

At the end of the tasting the slogan appeared as a question on the screen: Do you love it or hate it now?

And most of us said: Maybe I didn't love all, but there were a few which I really liked...

For me it's again a very nice evening with good stuff in the glass, good smokes and even better people.

Thx to all the guys who found their way to the lounge to share this event in this group, thx to Urs for the cigars... and thx to Laphroaig for making such a wonderful "nectar".

I'm really lookin forward to our next tasting which should happen in October or November... it won't be easy to have a good idea, to make it better, more exclusive or whatever then the last one... we'll see... maybe I still have some cannons in the backhand to create another fireworks.

    Homemade pasta reloaded

Second time I made some pasta... this time I tried to roll it out a bit thinner but I guess I need a machine to get it to the right thickness.

After fillin the the first time with some salmon-cheese-cream I decided to take mushrooms this time... a mixture of champignons, onions, garlic and prosciutto...

    All cut into small pieces

I fried the mix in the pan and topped it off with some Grappa which has been stored in Sherry casks... sounded like a good combo for me....

    Pimpin it with some Grappa

After the experience I made last time with the dough being too thick I tried to roll it out as thin as possible but it still was to thick... I definetly need a machine with which I can make it much thinner...

    Waitin to be cooked....

Unfortunately I found out that we have now Parmesan in the house to eat with those Ravioli, so I needed some compensation...

I decided to melt some butter, put some dried sage leafs into it... added with a bunch of tomatos cut in to small pieces it should be a good sauce...

    The sauce smelled awesome...

The boilin water with the pasta

The result was not perfect but it gettin better. The main issue is the thickness, so the cooking time is a bit longer than I expected... I think that I can solve this problem when using a machine to create a thin dough.... But the fillin and the sauce, which I made spontanously, where both very tasty...

    Dinner is served, please enjoy

    Ardbeg 1975, Spirit of Scotland

One of those older Ardbegs you can get at a reasonable price....unfortunately bottled at 40 %.

Nose: Decent sweetness, citrus, hints of smoke, seaweed

Taste: A perfect balance of citrus, charcoal, smoke, some herbs and saltiness hits the palate, with the smoke being very intensive.

Aftertaste: The smoke seems to be everlasting... what a nice dram

    03/16 - Smoking in Kriessern

Yesterday evening I met with two friends in the lounge of the restaurant "Sonne" in Kriessern which is just around the corner from the place where I live.

Before we went upstairs to the lounge we'd something to eat in the restaurant... some really good Cordon Bleu... but the filling was with local prosciutto and cheese... very good stuff... and a good basis for the following smokes.

It seems that Wednesday is a good day to meet... the lounge was empty beside of us... perfect....

I wasn't in the mood for big and fat cigars... so I smoked some smaller ones...  in particular it've been:
    • Festival 2000 Mareva --> always a great smoke
    • Rafael Gonzalez Vitola C from the 70s --> wow, really outstanding... completly different to regular RG's I smoked before...
    • Montecristo Robusto EL 2000 --> fantastic EL, they developed really good in the past 10 years

The next Whisky Tasting in the Griffins Business Lounge in Kreuzlingen is comin nearer... it'll be the fifth event and I´m sure some more´ll follow...

It's gettin harder and harder to find a good topic for an evening, cuz I always wanna combine it with good cigars... so the choice is a bit limited. I hope that I made a good choice again and due to the fact that people always loved the peaty stuff we´ll have another event with peaty stuff... a Laphroaig Vertical Tasting...

    Laphroaig 25 yo.

Nose: Some fresh smoke and soft spices, decent sweetness, upcoming smell of antiseptic, very medicinal

Taste: Surprisingly weak (shit, this one only 40 %), leather, some iodine, hints of peat in the background, sweetness of dried fruits, charcoal

Taste with water: It opens up and the peat is gettin very dominant... some kinda sweet peatyness

Aftertaste: Pepper and charcoal, candied fruits, medicinal, long and complex...

    A very relaxing evening

Yesterday I met with Marc to smoke some good stick and have some really good conversation...

After arriving at his shop I took a coffee and a LGC Triunfos, one of the two Swiss Regional Editions from 2010... Definetly a very nice cigar, although it's a big RG which I don't prefer lately...

After he closed the shop we took the car to drive to Bad Ragaz and spend some time in the AVO Lounge where we'd been a few weeks ago... I like this place...

There we'd a custom rolled Double Pyramide that he brought from Cuba... young, but very tasty... and definetly much better than the cigar I smoked later.

A while back I got some cigars from a fellow smoker... one of those was a custom rolled from the Vegas Robaina farm... it looked very nice with the maduro colored, oily wrapper... but after firin it up I was totally disappointed... no taste! Just hot air... nothin else... a total disaster... this stick wasn't worth a buck.

But anyhow... we talked a lot about this and that... upcoming events in the Lounge in Kreuzlingen... news ideas for future events... new cigars... latest developments in Cuba... the amazing quality of the tobacco leaves which've just been harvested... seems like there'll be good quality in the next years...

Diplomaticos No. 1 in cellophane from the 70s

    Last one outta Allan's bomb....

After removing the cello a smell of old leather, dry wood and the smell I call "old library" is in the nose... The cigar itself has a light colorado colored, fine wrapper and it's extremly box-pressed.

The first puffs say: welcome to the library... old paper and the typical smooth vintage flavor that I like so much. After a while decent sweetness is coming up joined by some white pepper.

In the second third the taste turns over to dark roasted coffee, wood and strong tobacco... oh well... that's a nice old lady...

The last third is still woody with a very intensive aroma of fresh soft pretzel which remains until I put it to the ashtray....

The smoking time was 2 hours.... 2 wonderful hours... an awesome smoke.

Diplomaticos No. 7 from the 70s

Cigar no. 2 outta Allan's package... I had a few from '88 before, so I'm curious about this one.

A smell of wood and exotical spices comes to the nose... some hints of white pepper in the background. The wrapper is fine and light colorado colored.

Firing up carefully, clipping the head and takin the first puffs... nose-exhale... fantastic! Intensive spicy notes, some cedar, light roasted coffee... those are the impressions during the first third... it's on the spot promptly.

The second third is also dominated by the spicy notes, white pepper's gettin more intensive... some floral notes coming up...

During the last third it's gettin smoother, this cigar is very complex. Wood, leather, spices, aromas of matured cheese (hard to describe)... it's FAN-FUCKIN-TASTIC!

I put it down to the ashtray after 95 minutes of smoking... always a perfect draw. Remarkable smoke.

    Diplomaticos No. 5 from 1988

Another impressin smoke... Diplomaticos is definitely one of my favorite brands.

This one has a colorado colored, silky wrapper with a decent smell of hay and licorice.

Firin up carefully, clippin the head and takin the first puff... oh wow... surprisingly easy draw but full of flavor...

The first third starts with aromas of mushrooms, old dry paper, oak and some white pepper... well balanced and really hard to describe this fantastic mixture.

At the second third some refreshing menthol's comin up... exotical spices in the foreground based on a background flavor of old paper, some wood and leather...

The last third shows the strength, this one's definetly no lightweight... leather, wood and fresh milled black pepper paired with roasted coffee and a certain creamyness...

All in all a really nice smoke which lasted for exactly one hour.

    Rock´n´Roll Train on 3rd place

In my latest report I wrote about the carnival parade in Rebstein. Roger who lives in the flat below us and some of his friends had again a wagon which they prepared for this parade.

After the parade the three best wagons had been honored and their wagon with the slogan "Rock´n´Roll Train" finished on the third place!

Congrats guys, you did a good job....
