03/25 - Laphroaig Vertical Tasting

After the last event when we'd some rare and old stuff I needed to bring people back to earth... what's better to use for this than some peaty stuff? I made my decision for Laphroaig. Laphroaig only.

A vertical tasting with the following participants:
  • Laphroaig 7 yo, Douglas Laing's Premier Barrel Selection
  • Laphroaig 10 yo, Exclusive Malts
  • Laphroaig 12 yo, Scotch Single Malt Circle
  • Laphroaig 13 yo, High Spirits
  • Laphroaig 13 yo, Chateau Lafite Finish, Auld Distillers Collection
  • Laphroaig 18 yo, Waldhaus am See
  • Laphroaig 25 yo, Distillery bottling
But before we started we, which was Marcel, Alex and Tom met at Urs shop to have our first cigar, which was a Partagas Serie de Connaisseur No. 1 for me... a good start into this evening full of pleasure.... and it fit to the advice I gave the people, that Partagas would go along well with the Whisky.

Of course we needed a good basis before we started with all that Whisky, so we walked over the border to Konstanz to a local Chinese (fast food) restaurant to have some fried noodles with duck.

Back at the lounge I arranged all the stuff, waiting for the rest of the participants to arrive. 7 really interesting Laphroaigs with an age from 7 years up to 25 years... the slogan of the evening was: Laphroaig - love it or hate it. That´s the official slogan of Laphroaig and it hits the nail on the head, because in most cases there is only black or white for this Whisky... love it or hate it.

This time we'd been 9 people, more or less the same crew which attended also the other four tasting which we'd before.

On top we got some nice cigars from Urs who also took part at this evening... he brought a box of Partagas Lusitanias to smoke... from 2007... and they´re really good and were a really good match.

It's again an interesting discussion to talk with the guys about their impressions... to find out what's everybody tasting... agreeing or disagreeing with the notes that I took and put into the presentation...

If I have to make the top three of this range it would be the following:
    • Laphroaig 25 yo, Distillerie bottling
    • Laphroaig 13 yo, Chateau Lafite Finish, Auld Distillers Collection
    • Laphroaig 12 yo, Scotch Single Malt Circle

The 25 yo is simply amazing... like the Ardbeg LotI or Bowmore 25 yo. Unfortunately only 40 %, but if you lean back and enjoy it, it´s HEAVEN!

    Pourin in some nectar

The two others were close ahead for me... the Chateau Lafite cask had an amazing influence on the smoky Laphroaig.... the interaction between peat and sweetness of the wine is fantastic... and Maggie's Laphroaig... what else can I say then: you picked up another great cask... as all the good ones I tried before... go ahead like this.

At the end of the tasting the slogan appeared as a question on the screen: Do you love it or hate it now?

And most of us said: Maybe I didn't love all, but there were a few which I really liked...

For me it's again a very nice evening with good stuff in the glass, good smokes and even better people.

Thx to all the guys who found their way to the lounge to share this event in this group, thx to Urs for the cigars... and thx to Laphroaig for making such a wonderful "nectar".

I'm really lookin forward to our next tasting which should happen in October or November... it won't be easy to have a good idea, to make it better, more exclusive or whatever then the last one... we'll see... maybe I still have some cannons in the backhand to create another fireworks.

    2. Partagas is a perfect partner to Laphroaig imho... unfortunately I don´t have access to those bottlings that you´d there... only the standard stuff available here...
