Westvleteren XII

For many people who like beer - especially Belgian beer - the Westvleteren is the Holy Grail of beer... at least it's the Holy Grail of Belgian beer... one of the beers which's really hard to get.

There are 5 monks in the St. Sixtus abbey brewing for a defined time of the year, the total production is not more than 4´750 hl. That's nothing in comparison to other abbeys which brew much more. That's one of the reason why it's really pricey, the limited no. of bottles.

The other limitation is the way you can purchase it. Normally it's only available at the small shop of the abbey. You've to pick it up after registering with your license plate and the defined time for pickup that you get at the phone. No other car/license plate, not being late... difficult.

But from time to time they release a gift pack for some supermarkets and some of those gift packs found their way to Switzerland... and I got some, which makes me really happy.

Ok, but lemme write something about the beer itself. The smell is impressing... plums, raisins, figs, banana bread... very fruity and it covers any alcohol, nothing to smell at an ABV of 10.2 %.

Wow, with the very first sip the palate is hit with the aromas you took in from the scent. Sweet bread, malts, dark sugars, candied raisins, figs, and suprisingly a tiny cherry twinge. But not too sweet, it's just the right amount of sweetness. A hint of hop flavor comes through in your search for it. Just like in the scent portion of the review the alcohol was hidden and it holds true to the taste. This combination of flavors is really awesome... hard to put that complexity in the right words.

Then you pour the rest of the bottle into the glass, taking care to resolve all the yeast from the bottom of the bottle. Dark brown and cloudy. The taste is multiplied, even more intensive then before... you think you can chew it.

Is it now the best beer worldwide? Is it the best beer I ever had? Definitely it´s one of the top beers I tried...

P.S.: If you are interested in a bottle of the Westvleteren XII, don't hesitate to get in contact with me...
