05/18 - 05/28 - Sunshine State reloaded

It's seems to get a tradition that we go the States in the first half of the year... after a trip to Las Vegas, Philadelphia and Orlando we headed to Fort Lauderdale this time, the second visit to the Sunshine State of Florida.

When we arrived it was rainy (we'd to fly some circles over the ocean due to a heavy thunderstorm at the airport) but still very warm. For the next two days we didn't care too much about the weather because we'd some shopping on our schedule... and Sawgrass Mills Outlet is completely indoor, so who cares about rain.

On Sunday evening we met with Seth, a guy whom I know from the cigar boards. He lives near to Fort Lauderdale and so we took the chance to meet again after we've seen us at the herf in Orlando last year. His wife's doing roller derby and this was new for us (we've only seen it in movies but not in real action), so we met at the skating hall and while the girls made their rounds we'd some time to talk and to take pictures... it's really rough.. we could see some really hard body checks...

After the match, which was one by the local team with Seth's wife, we drove to a place close to the skating hall where the girls celebrated their victory. We stayed outside on the parking lot where we fired up some Taboada 109 from 2008 which I've brought with me and Seth took some nice beers out of the cooler he carried with him in his truck. We'd a few different ones to taste, I forgot most of them but I don't wanna forget to mention his homemade brews: a chocolate stout (which is not my style but it was good) and a beer brewed with blueberry, which was really good... even Tanja liked it... and she normally absolutely dislikes any beer...

After two days of extended walks through the big shopping mall it was time for a day of relaxing... and that's what we did...

cigar, cigars, cigar's, blog, blogger, tasted, tasting, tastings, tasty, smoke, smoked, smoking, smokes, smoker, vaduz, kreuzlingen, schweiz, switzerland, suiza, swiss, suisse, whisky, whiskys, whiskies, whiskey, whiskeys, blind tasting, experiment, experiments, review, reviews, reviewing, eldondo, balgach, portmann, portmanns, portmann's, lonsdale, lonsdales, robusto, robustos, corona, coronas, box, humidor, humidors, boxes, tobacco, tabak, zigarre, zigarren, rauchen, verkostung, heiko, blumentritt, heiko blumentritt, jar, jars, ceramic jar, ceramic jars, trip, trips, pharmacy smoke, ans, lounge

In the evening I was invited to meet Seth and a few of his friends to attend one of their beer tastings that they do in regular intervals... really interesting and tasty stuff... and funny to see that those guys are crazy on the same level for beer as I am for cigars and Single Malt... I enjoyed that evening a lot, thank you guys!

On the next day we visited Flamingo Gardens... a nice park close to Fort Lauderdale... maybe Flamingo Gardens is not the best name for it, because they've much more peacocks than Flamingos... anyhow: we'd a good time there...

In the evening we'd another appointment with Seth at the Mai Kai, a polynesian restaurant. The restaurant was a very good choice: the food was absolutely excellent and after dinner we watched a show from our seats which were directly located in front of the stage.

We changed the location later to move to a cigar bar and smoked some sticks there... I'd an ERdM Lonsdale from 1998 and an Upmann Half Corona... unfortunately no pix of this part of the evening...

On Wednesday we originally planned to make a day trip to Miami... ok, we drove down there but canceled to stay there due to really heavy rainfalls caused by the passing hurricane. In the end it was a good decision because we saw pictures of massive floodings in the evening which've been there later... so we enjoyed another day in the sun on the beach after having an excellent BBQ lunch at Tom Jenkins BBQ in Ft. Lauderdale. Some words about Tom Jenkins: for me the best BBQ that we'd there... the place itself is more or less concipated for take-away customers but you can also have a seat there and eat... we tried a few locations but the food here was the best for us.

Our visit to Butterfly World on Thursday was shorter than planned because of some short but heavy periods of rain the butterflies didn't come out again and so we decided to come back on another day... thanks to the guys there who gave us a rain check for another entree.

Here are a few pix of our visit, some more will follow in a separate report.

Friday was a perfect hot and sunny day... a good day to visit the Seaquarium... Tanja fulfilled her wish here to swim with dolphins... a great experience... here also just a few selected pix, some more'll follow in a separate report.

On Saturday we made our second visit to Butterfly World, this time with perfect weather... in the afternoon we enjoyed the sun and in the evening we met with Elli and Seth for an excellent dinner in the Chima steakhouse. They´ve different kinds of meat that they present at your table and cut off whatever you like... as long as you like... This dinner asked for a cigar and so we changed again the place to a cigar bar where I had a Montecristo D EL 2005. A big thank you to Elli and Seth who spent some time with us during our stay here in Ft. Lauderdale... we really enjoyed the time that you shared with us...

Sunday... flying back to Frankfurt... but luckily in the evening... so we'd the whole day to enjoy... some more sunbathing...

Due to another heavy thunderstorm we'd another delay on our way back but in the end we arrived safe and sound in Frankfurt and after a few hours later we're back at home here in Switzerland...
