Vertical Tasting Ardbeg Uigeadail 2003 - 2010

At a German whisky board a guy split 5 bottles of Ardbeg Uigeadail which was originally released in the year 2003. This bottling definitely contained whisky from some old Sherry casks from the late 70s... the later ones not... Some people say that the first release was the best... so let's try to find it out by comparing a few batches which have been bottled between 2003 and 2010.

To be more precisly I'm talking about those bottles:
  • L3 283 00:43 --> bottled in 2003
  • L4 188 07:25 --> bottled in 2004
  • L5 290 11:48 --> bottled in 2005
  • L6 313 10:14 --> bottled in 2006
  • L10 151 14:18 --> bottled in 2010

I covered the labels of the bottles to make it some kinda blind tasting... always better to get a more neutral impression.

Ok.... here are my impressions... I tried to make a spider diagram for each sample, they also show the tendency of my rating.

Ardbeg Uigeadail 2003

Nose: Intensive notes of dried fruits and peat, some oak wood

Taste: Explosion of smoke and ashes, peat, smoked ham, notes of citrus, decent sherry sweetness, some fruity aromas

Aftertaste: Long and peaty

Ardbeg Uigeadail 2004

Nose: Decent notes of dried fruits and peat

Taste: Some peat, hints of citrus, spices and dry fruits, some kinda floral?, flat

Aftertaste: Not very long.. gone and forgotten

Ardbeg Uigeadail 2005

Nose: Intensive notes of dried fruits, citrus, peat

Taste: Burnt wood and peat, Sherry sweetness, hints of citrus, malt and toffee

Aftertaste: Long, with a pleasant peaty sweetness

Ardbeg Uigeadail 2006

Nose: Smoke, citrus, Sherry, malt

Taste: Smoked ham, peaty sweetness, oak and toffee

Aftertaste: Long with a decent bitterness

Ardbeg Uigeadail 2010

Nose: Notes of dried fruits and peat

Taste: Burnt wood, peat, citrus, fruity

Aftertaste: Long and peaty

In the end I rated those 5 samples as follows:
  • 2003
  • 2005
  • 2006
  • 2010
  • 2004

They're all not bad, but in comparison of those 5 the 2004 was the worst and the 2003, the original bottling, the best by far... I'm glad to have still an unopened bottle here...
