10/26 - Springbank Vertical Tasting

It's the 8th tasting event that we held in the Griffins Business Lounge in Kreuzlingen and we'd a record number of participants... 17 people on the whole (after we started 4 years ago just with a handful of guys). In this case people from Germany, Austria, Switzerland (of course) joined us... even my friend Marc from Canada was here... He made his plans to make it possible to have a stop in Kreuzlingen for a few days with the intention to join this tasting!

The topic of the evening was "Springbank Vertical Tasting" and the range was from 6.5 yo. up to 28 yo.:
  • 9 yo., 58.0 %, Refill Bourbon, Marsala finish, Distillery bottling
  • 10 yo., 56.5 %, Sherry cask, Private bottling for Dr. Clemens Dillmann
  • 11 yo., 46.0 %, Duncan Taylor
  • 14 yo., 53.7 %, Scotch Single Malt Circle
  • 14 yo., 51.3 % Sherry cask, Private bottling
  • 28 yo., 54.0 %, Dun Bheagan
  • 6.5 yo., 60.0 %, Springbank private bottling, matured in a Lagavulin cask, very last bottle of the cask (unfiltered) --> Springavulin

I pre-tasted the whiskys earlier this year (http://bit.ly/Springbank_Pre_Tasting), due to this I won't talk about the specific details of the whiskys. Just one thing: all 7 whiskys we'd were absolutely great but the match winner for me (and think also for some others) was the 14 yo. from the Scotch Single Malt Circle (www.scotch-single.de). Maggie, thx for that outstanding bottling...

As all the times before Urs was kind enough to supply some cigars for the tasting for free, thanks again for that really generous gesture. We smoked a Trinidad Ingenios, EL 2007 which went very well with those fantastic whiskys.

The whole evening was a great pleasure and felt really good for me that all the people, even those who been at on of my tastings for the first time, enjoyed it...

10/26 - Saentis calling

My friend Marc from Canada stayed a few days in our area. The weather forecast talked about snow which should come down to the valleys at the weekend and so we decided to take advantage of the last chance to go to the Saentis while the weather´s still fine... which means also that we escaped the thick fog that´s in the valley...

We parked the car at the Schwaegalp where still was some fog... on a level of 1´300 m / 4265 ft. We finished the RyJ Celestiales Finos that we smoked on the ride and took the cable car to the summit...

Even though there where clouds in the sky, above the fog, the view was great and Marc and I enjoyed our time there...

Traditionally you drink some Schnaps on the top of a mountain, in this case I took some Appenzeller with me to give Marc some kinda impression of this typical thing for that region...

We also took the time for another smoke... a Trinidad Short Robusto T, which´s the Limited Edition from 2010... a fantastic cigar... but the price really sucks...

We drove back in the afternoon, grabbed all the whisky stuff at home and meet the other guys in Kreuzlingen who attended us for the whiskytasting which took place later.

10/25 - Smoke in the valley and the house

Part One: Smoke in the valley

Another grey and foggy day in the valley, looks like a lot of smoke... so I took the chance to drive a few km from home, uphill and over the fog and clouds...

The Hohe Hirschberg is on app. 1´100 m and was a perfect sunny place to enjoy a cigar and a beer before my Canadian friend would pick me up in the late afternoon...

Part Two: Smoke in the house - dinner at the Longhorn BBQ Smokehouse

When I came home I just had the time to take a quick shower before Marc arrived and we made a ride to Vaduz to Portmann where we tried the new Romeo y Julieta Petit Churchill... I´m no big fan of that "raping" of the name Churchill, for me there´s only ONE real Churchill, which´s a great cigar. This one doesn´t fulfill any expectations... boring smoke, no risk that I´m looking for them in the future.

We spent the rest of the evening in the Longhorn BBQ Smokehouse in Dornbirn (www.bbq-longhorn.at)... good BBQ stuff, good cigars and good conversations... it´s always a pleasure to meet those guys...

We´ll see again at the Springbank Vertical Tasting in the Griffins Business Lounge tomorrow... maybe after Marc and I made a trip to the Saentis, depending on the weather, but I guess it should be fine and we´ll spend a great day...
