01/25 - The Big 4

No longer in the thirties... on Friday I turnded 40. Honestly... nothing changed... but anyhow, it's still a change... ;-)

We started this day at midnight with a bottle of Swiss "Champagne", nice stuff...

After a few hours of sleep (the older you get the less sleep you need) we drove to Bezau to have a fantastic breakfast in the Hotel Gams (www.hotel-gams.at). They´re well know for all the wellness they offer but also for the excellent food...

After the extended breakfast and our arrival at home I'd my first smoke of the day: a Dunhill Mojito (always a very good choice if it has to be something special) which I paired with some DeuS Brut des Flandres from 2010. A very good combination which gave me about 90 minutes of great pleasure...

For dinner we've made a reservation in a tiny little restaurant in Dornbirn: good home cooking on a high quality level.... beer soup, beef tenderloin for me... pig cheeks and filled tenderloin for Tanja... all cooked to perfection...

Due to the fact that some stuff had to prepared for the next day I went without a after-dinner-smoke in the restaurant but I took my time to smoke another stick at home later. A Glen Grant 36yo., distilled in 1973 (what else?) and a 1994, my favorite stick of the "Holy Trinity". A combo made in heaven!

On Saturday we first me met with a bunch of guys in the Griffins Business Lounge before we changed the location in the afternoon for the big party in the evening.

The evening was filled with a lot of surprises and awesome gifts... thx a lot again to all who made this an unforgettable event!

The Dark Side of Belgian Beers

I'm not the biggest dan of dark beers, but from time to time you can also find some good ones... the following are a little range of those... and I liked them...

St. Bernardus Abt 12

Intensive flavors of caramel, dark fruits, brown sugar and bread. Perfect mouthfeel, extremely smooth and the carbonation was not overwhelming, hard to believe that it has 10 % of alcohol... very well embedded... refreshing and pleasant.

Grimbergen Optimo Bruno

Rich fruity aroma with notes of bananas, yeast and dried fruits with a considerable note of alcohol. The taste has a fruity sweetness with aromas of banana, yeast, bread and dried fruit, slightly sour too. Rich and complex. Mild aftertaste of dried fruit with some aicd.

Millevertus McVertus

Good smell... some roasted malt, exotical fruits... then the first sip: hrmmm... a lil bit "watery", less intensive in the taste than you would expect. Decent maltiness, some slightly hints of burnt wood... but that's it. Pleasant to drink @ 4.8 % and creamy in the mouth. A Belgian lightweight.

Scotch Silly

Yeast, caramel malt, some muted fruit, a hint of raisins as well. Pretty close to the nose on this brew. No hint of the 8% ABV at all, even in the aftertaste, which is very malty...

Arend Dubbel

The aroma is very sweet: mostly brown sugars and maple syrup. The sweetness on the tongue is not as strong as the smell suggests but there's a strong maple syrup presence. No hop at all. Surprisingly it seems to be stronger than it really is... on the whole: not too bad at all.

01/18 - Cheese fondue and cigars

The first event of 2013 in the Griffins Business Lounge in Kreuzlingen... an event with cheese fondue... FANTASTIC!

The weather was perfect to enjoy the hot cheese... snow fall the whole day long, temperatures below the freezing point...

I didn't smoke the cigars that Urs handed out (a CAO with a ring gauge of 58(!!) --> WTF!?!? and a Cain Something Ligero)... I stuck to my Cuban cigars and were really happy with a RASCC, a Juan Lopez Piramide ER Asia Pacific, a Partagas Series C No. 3 EL 2012 and a Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No.2...

Sorry for the crappy cell phone pix but I forgot my whole stuff at home. It's the first time since I've the DSLR that I forgot it at home when going to an event... but sometimes you need a first time...

Anyhow... we'd a very good time, I hope we'll do it again...

01/12 - Huskys, Malamuts and Co.

My second visit to the dogsledding event in Splügen after being there the first time in 2012.

Even though it wasn't as cold as last year, it still was just around -13 °C / 9 F, which's not really mild... especially considering that it takes a while for the sun to show up due to all the surrounding mountains.

I hope you enjoy the pix I made and get an impression of the atmosphere...
