02/22 - Finest Spirits, Munich

This year'll be a year full of whisky... it started with the Finest Spirits in Munich... some more whisky-related stuff will follow...

Originally I planned to drive to Munich together with a friend of mine but unfortunately he got ill over night. But before he called me I already had some pork in the smoke for Pulled Pork, so I had to eat it on my own before I walked from the hotel to the place where the event took place...

The hotel was just a 20 minutes walk away from the location where the festival took place. It's a museum of the Munich Transport Authority... a cool place for such kinda event.

After entering the hall I made a walk around to get an overview of all those companies who're presenting there stuff... an incredible selection of vintage and rare Single Malt which made my mouth water... there were also exhibitors showing other kinda spirits (it's not only a whisky fair but also other spirits) but my intention was to look for the Malts...

A little selection of the stuff I tried:
  • Bruichladdich 10yo., bottled in the early 80s
  • Bowmore Deluxe bottled in the 70s
  • Balblair 10yo. bottled in the 80s
  • Aberlour-Glenlivet from 30s for Holt (USA)
  • Springbank 17 yo., The Maltman, 1995 – 2012, Oloroso Sherry Cask, 50.3%
  • 31yo. Macduff (cask sample that will be bottled for the SSMC)
  • 30yo. Brora (bottled 2007), 55.7%
  • Ardbeg, 7yo. SMWS 33.75 ‘Penetrates and explodes’, Single Cask
  • Bruichladdich 7yo. matured in Port casks only
  • Bruichladdich special vatting of Port Charlotte, Octomore and two 18 and 19 yo. casks of Bruichladdich
  • etc.
They also had a cigar lounge where I took the chance to take a seat and enjoyed a good stick while talking to friends that I don't see every now and then...

Another highlight of the evening was the "Bruichladdich Ultimate Tasting - Compare and Contrast" which was organized by Whisky & Dreams. René Arm led through it and made a really good job... those 70 minutes in which we'd 4 different whiskys flew by extremly fast... The line-up was fantastic, here it is:
  • Bruichladdich Ten Years old – old bottling from end 70s / beginning 80s, 0.75l, 43 %: a classic straight “typical” Laddie from the old times.
  • Bruichladdich 21 Years, Cuvee Series 382, 46 %, matured in Sauternes and Barsac casks
  • Bruichladdich 2003 Single Port Wood Cask specially bottled for Whisky & Dreams for the first Bruichladdich Day 2010, 57.5 %, a  rare Single Cask matured 100 % in an exPort Wood Cask
  • Bruichladdich “Isle of the Blessed” 7 Years specially bottled for Whisky & Dreams for the second Bruichladdich Day 2011, 55.0 % which is a special vatting of Octomore, Port Charlotte and two older Casks 17 and 18 Years old from exSherry Wood and Wine Cask

Smoked for you: Quintero Favoritos & Rafael Gonzalez Perlas

They're available in Switzerland since last week... a got a few singles and smoked them... here are my brief impressions.

During the first half inch there were aromas which I normally only know from old cigars with an age of 20+ years... leather, wood, old paper, tea-like... unfortunately this "vintage-flavor" fades away and makes room for the Quintero-type tobacco flavor added by some spicy notes...

There's no dramatical change of pace during the smoke, a solid smoke from the first to the last puff... For all who don't like it too complex but prefer a good and strong tobacco flavor, this cigar will definitely be a good choice.

It's a bit shorter than a regular Robusto (4 mm to be precisely), the price is about CHF 3.80... that's fair.

The cigar is on the spot after firing it up, no tit for tat... Very earthy, aroma of black tea with a decent sweetness in the background. I read some comments about bitterness and "pronounced youth", nothing to find about it... maybe during the last inch... but that's no wonder imho.

Even though this cigar is young and fresh it already smokes well... it reminds me a bit of those Lonsdales from 2002, which've developed very well over the last years... if the Perlas take the same "road" they'll have a great future... and for sure a place in my humidor...

With a price of  CHF 5.40 they´re on the same level as the PLPC and also tastewise they're a nice alternative to get some variety...

02/15 - Welcome back to the Fritz Carlton

It's already middle of February.... which means it's time for another Friday smoke at the pharmacy... another chance for us to make the trip to Wörrstadt to meet some friends and have a few good smokes...

cigar, cigars, cigar's, blog, blogger, tasted, tasting, tastings, tasty, smoke, smoked, smoking, smokes, smoker, vaduz, kreuzlingen, schweiz, switzerland, suiza, swiss, suisse, whisky, whiskys, whiskies, whiskey, whiskeys, blind tasting, experiment, experiments, review, reviews, reviewing, eldondo, balgach, portmann, portmanns, portmann's, lonsdale, lonsdales, robusto, robustos, corona, coronas, box, humidor, humidors, boxes, tobacco, tabak, zigarre, zigarren, rauchen, verkostung, heiko, blumentritt, heiko blumentritt, jar, jars, ceramic jar, ceramic jars, trip, trips, pharmacy smoke, ans, lounge

It wasn't just a regular Friday smoke but also Nino's birthday (www.flyingcigar.de), he turned 60 on Saturday, so we could celebrate him at midnight... He handed out some custom rolled cigars from the El Laguito factory with his own special bands... the cigar was fantastic, thx again for that, Nino...

Beside those cigars Nino also brought some bottles of rum with him but as you know me I stuck to the Single Malt which's available too... the Laphroaig Quarter Cask's always a good choice...

I brought some of the Montecristo cake with me that I got from Tanja for my birthday 3 weeks ago... so all those guys who didn't come could've the chance to try a piece of it...

As always it was a great evening and we went to bed in the early hours of Saturday morning... business as usual...
