06/20 - Partagas El Libro

I know Amir in the meantime for a few years but we only had contact through different cigar boards but finally we'd the chance to meet personally during his European tour for the presentation of his book  "Partagas - El Libro".

For me it was a relaxed Friday where I quit work earlier, for him it started with a hazzle after recognizing that his luggage has not arrived with him in Zurich. As usual I joined Urs in the humidor room of his shop where we had a cup of coffee and a fresh rolled custom rolled Lancero-sized cigar. Amir had to sign a dozen of books but he always had some time to sit together with us for a smoke and a chat...

I also met another cigar aficionado and blogger from Zurich, Urs Alder, who also was at the event of the Habanos Man of the Year a few weeks ago. He gifted me a cigar, a Bolivar Regional Edition for Russia, and kindly asked me for a review of it... I never had those before, so I'm really looking forward to smoke it... hopefully it's one of those typical Bolivar with earthy notes and a certain strength.

When the shop closed we moved to the lounge where Amir gave a brief presentation about his book after we'd a quick snack from the buffet. It's a short but interesting summary of the history of Partagas and definitely made me curious to read the book intensively... for sure I'll have some time in July to do so.

After this official part of the evening I'd some time to sit together with Amir and talk about this and that... it was really great and I'm looking forward to meet again under less "official" circumstances...

06/15 - Hillrace Hemberg

Hemberg. A small village with a population of less than 1000 people. Silent, idyllic. But it changed last weekend because the hillrace was taking place there for the third time. It has been revived a few years back after a long break of more than 20 years.

A lot of horsepower, the smell of gasoline and burnt rubber in the air... what else do I have to say about this event... maybe one thing: the new track record was established on Sunday, the winner needed a bit more than 54 seconds for the approx. 1.8 km uphill and around some really sharp corners...

Buller Gorge Swingbridge

The longest swingbridge in New Zealand... it's 110 m long and crosses the Buller River between Murchison and Westport. It was a beautiful day when I made this trip and the level of the river was relatively low in comparison to some pictures that I have seen before.

The whole Buller Gorge Swingbridge Adventure and Heritage Park is a really fantastic area in the middle of the nature and so I took the chance for an extended walk to explore it. There's also a waterfall on one of the tracks but as I'll have a separate report with some of the waterfalls I've visited there will be no pictures of it right now...

As it was the end of the summer season there haven't been much people therefore the attractions like the comet line or the "Supaman line" where you can "fly" across the gorge were closed.

Imho it's one the places that you should've on your bucket list when you come to NZ.

06/04 - Whisky and... lamb

After skipping the last event (I wasn't really in the mood for mussels) I took the chance last week for another regulars' table of the Scotch Single Malt Circle in the Gasthaus Gemsle... the group is getting bigger and bigger and always we'd some nice bottles with all of those which were put on the table.

Two Tobermory... one from Cadenheads and the other one from the Limburg Dramclub, their first bottling is a peated Tobermory. Interesting to drink them side by side and with the Dramclub one being much better than the Cadenheads it lost its fascination when pouring it in later at the evening.

I'm not sure if I've not been in the right mood for whisky (the leaving cold was definitely not influencing my taste buds) but none of those whiskys didn't really get me... the 6 yo. Islay Blend from C&S (by far the cheapest one) hooked me up most... the latest release of the Caol Ila Destillers Edition was a disappointment too... diluded to 40 or 43 % it was just watery and boring...

The food was ok but honestly it's been better many times before... let's cross that evening off the list and look forward to autumn where this series will be continued...
